Centralization of Product Data and Information Management at Wego Systembaustoffe GmbH
The Challenge
Wego Systembaustoffe GmbH is a leading German distributor of building and technical insulation systems and part of the international SIG plc Group. The company employs more than 1,300 people across 50+ locations and connects manufacturers with contractors, offering a wide range of products for construction, technical insulation, drywall, roofing and façades.
As part of the SIG Group, Wego is consistently pursuing a digital transformation strategy, with the standardisation and automation of product information management playing a key role across the organisation.
As the number of products and sales channels continued to grow, Wego faced the challenge of centralising product data and ensuring consistency across systems. Product information was spread across multiple sources and differed in structure and format, making it difficult to use effectively in e-commerce and integrate with SAP.
The SIG Group had already gained positive experience with Pimcore in its Polish subsidiary, where the platform successfully streamlined and automated information management for thousands of products. Building on this experience, the Group decided to implement a similar solution at Wego to create a single source of truth for product information, reduce the time required to publish product data and establish a foundation for further digitalisation of processes across the SIG Group.
- Product data was scattered across multiple systems, with no single source of truth for product information.
- Lack of standardised data formats and a consistent product information model.
- Difficulty identifying related products and assortment variants.
- Manual and time-consuming updates of product data and specification files.
- Lack of automation for attributes and units of measurement, as well as a structured process for preparing products for publication.
- Long time-to-market for new products.
- Insufficient data quality made it difficult to search for and present products effectively in the online store.
- Need to integrate product data with SAP and the data warehouse.
The Solution
- Implemented a PIM system (Pimcore) for centralised management of approximately 120,000 SKUs.
- Combined text, numerical data, images and documents in a single repository, creating a single source of truth for product information.
- Standardised the data model and automated attribute management based on product categories.
- Introduced workflows to structure the product preparation process and improve data quality control.
- Implemented product variant structures to facilitate product search and presentation in the online store.
- Integrated the PIM with SAP and the data warehouse using Camel Databus, ensuring consistent and up-to-date information.
- Reduced time-to-market through process automation and centralised data management.
- Improved product data quality by eliminating errors and inconsistencies between systems.
- Created a scalable foundation for further development, including construction documentation management, file expiration dates and the introduction of private-label brands.
